I Was a Doctor to the Gypsies at Auschwitz

An Israeli doctor established in Seine-et-Marne since 1934, Dr Vexler was deported to Auschwitz, where he arrived on November 8, 1942. Stricken by the typhus epidemic, he survived and was first designated to work at the sinister crematoria; then assigned, as a doctor, to the Gypsy camp which had just been opened at Birkenau. He was there the assistant to the SS chief doctor, the tragically famous Dr Mengele, until the liquidation of the last Gypsies on the night of August 1st to 2nd, 1944. Dr Vexler kindly reserved his testimony for us, the exceptional value of which needs no emphasizing.

On June 2, 1943 in the morning, a Stubendienst [room attendant] came to tell us that several doctors would be designated to be transferred to the Gypsy camp. The route that we followed to go to Birkenau was the reverse of the one I had traveled in December 1942, when I was transferred from Birkenau to Auschwitz. I could once again see looming on the horizon the city of Oswiecim, a triangular silhouette whose bell tower formed the point. But what a change! After crossing construction sites, we skirted groups of barracks surrounded by their electrified barbed-wire enclosures. But the number of buildings had increased. They were the C.D.E. camps etc. I had known the outline of these camps in November 1942, but at that time they…

…were deserted. Now, the bustling activity that reigned there exceeded that of Auschwitz.

As we advanced, a rumor composed of voices mixed with instrumental sounds became more and more perceptible. All at once, the escort leader said to us: “There it is. You can see it now.” Indeed, we saw a multicolored crowd where one could clearly distinguish men, women, and children, and we heard choirs singing dominated by women’s voices. We stood dumbfounded. Everything was strange, starting with our march. All the time it lasted, we had not been encouraged even once by blows or urged on by familiar insults.

The SS escort said to us: “Halt! Mützen ab!” [Caps off!], and we stood motionless before the SS guardhouse. The non-commissioned officer announced the number of transferees to the Zigeunerlager [Gypsy camp] and we entered. Incredible spectacle: was it a dream or a joke? The inhabitants approached without fear, children ran up freely, people spoke to us. To our question: “What does this procession of women singing in a choir mean?”, we received the astonishing answer that this procession was returning from delousing. Thus this operation, painful and feared in all the camps, took on the form of a festival in the Gypsy camp.

We were led in front of a block where a Polish doctor, the chief doctor of the Krankenbau [infirmary complex of blocks], spoke to us correctly and distributed us among the various blocks. I was assigned to block 32, the last on the right before the sauna. I found there with pleasure the Polish doctors Ko. and Sn. It is known that the blocks of Birkenau, with the exception of the women’s camp, are all identical, an entry door at each end, the double chimney of an extreme end to the other and, on either side of this horizontal chimney, the three-tiered bunks with straw mattresses and blankets like at Auschwitz. The majority of the sick were naked. In 1943, the epidemic of exanthematic typhus was causing havoc among the Gypsy population and our block was packed with sick people. Several doctors, as well as many nurses, were infected, some mortally. Two Jewish doctors died in June and I lost an excellent Aryan German friend.

A bunk that theoretically was supposed to receive 12 patients ($4 \times 3$) accommodated 18, 20 and even 24. The morgue was full every day. One will ask why the infirmaries of the Gypsy camp were so crowded, when the blocks of Auschwitz were relatively comfortable. The answer is simple. The SS made sure that this relative comfort of non-Gypsy patients and the truck transporting Jewish patients to the gas chamber happened frequently. Thus overcrowding was avoided. On the other hand, the Gypsies had to die a natural death (disease, without appropriate care; superinfected scabies; deficiency diseases). They were and knew themselves guaranteed against death by gas.

The sick Gypsies were calm, patient, trusting. They spoke among themselves in their fluent mother tongue, that is to say German, Czech, Slovak, etc., which they interwove with Gypsy words. As they were crammed into their beds, the less sick took up more room by pushing…

…sometimes the weakest. Furthermore, and this happened often, those who could eat were in no hurry to declare the deaths among them, because they seized their food ration.

At the end of the summer of 1943, exanthematic typhus was declining, after having mowed down several thousand Gypsies. Our block changed occupants: from male service, it became female service. The women we had under treatment being “privileged internees” could not be affected except by privileged diseases: diarrhea, nutritional edema, superinfected scabies, septicemia, tuberculosis. No trauma. They were naked in their bed. Female modesty only dies with the woman. These Gypsy women, sick, naked, seemed to have lost it. It was only an appearance. In reality, when physical decay reaches a certain level, the suffering of offended modesty merges into global suffering and ceases to be perceived in isolation. Some still had a rag of a shirt and several even shoes.

Dr Mengele came almost every day to the Gypsy camp and each time children ran to meet him with cries of joy: “Uncle Mengele! Uncle Mengele!”. He questioned us with much simplicity, his attention at attention before him was not rigid. After the inspection, he went to the sauna where he examined the types of interesting Gypsies.

The beginning of autumn was beautiful and warm and rumors circulated that convoys coming from France and elsewhere were becoming rarer. This brought hope back to life and encouraged the nursing personnel to intensify their efforts to heal our sick. Infant mortality had been appalling since the start of the camp and a disease that we only knew from books, a disease called noma, was winning all the blocks, children hospitalized and children from camp blocks. If one asked currently a medical student in medicine or a doctor of less than 70 years of age what noma is, he would answer without hesitation that he does not know. Therefore a disease that has disappeared, just as the condemnations to the stake for having dissected a corpse or for having “turned” (made dance) the wolf and the goat have disappeared. Well, thanks to Hitlerism, this disease was called back to life and to a prosperous life. And hundreds of Gypsy children died from it in unspeakable suffering, spitting out pieces of cheeks, pieces of tongue, teeth, warding off by their pestilential odor even the most devoted caregivers. I did, at the request of the doctors, the autopsy of several of these children. Doctor Mengele wanted reports of anatomical verifications.

With the arrival of Professor Epstein, deported from the Faculty of Prague, cases of noma became rarer and rarer and the disease completely died out towards the end of the year. The Lagerarzt, Doctor Mengele, had a deep respect for Professor Epstein and supplied him with sulfonamides, and vitamins. On the other hand, the blocks were less crowded because the countries explored by the SS no longer supplied almost any Gypsies. They invented them, certainly, from detainees who were not Gypsies and to whom Mengele and his colleagues in anthropology discovered “characteristic signs”, but scientific certainty was nonetheless shaken.

In general, Czech Gypsies resisted imprisonment better than German Gypsies, and it is understandable. Czech Gypsies knew why they were in the camp. They felt that they shared the suffering of the entire Czech people. When they sang the Czech anthem followed by the Slovak anthem, their patriotic fervor was that of the Czechoslovak people. In contrast, German Gypsies did not know why they were there. Many of them had fought the campaign of France as German soldiers, and I saw dozens of N.S.D.A.P. and B.D.M. insignia. It was at the camp that I heard for the first time almost learned the “Marche de France”: “Au-delà de l’Escaut, au-delà de la Meuse, nous pénétrons en France…” [Beyond the Scheldt, beyond the Meuse, we enter France…] Others had fought the campaign in Russia and sang to me on several occasions “Das Russland Lied“: “Wir standen für Deutschland auf Posten, und hielten die heilige Wacht…” [We stood on guard for Germany, and kept the sacred watch…]. Were they then rejected by the German people? Inconceivable, unthinkable. Therefore, a clique of scoundrels had imprisoned them to make them die. What clique and why? This doubt gnawed at them morally and physically. Czechoslovak Gypsies knew that Germany would be defeated. German Gypsies felt part of the German people who, themselves, did not yet know that Germany would be defeated.

The afternoons were often quiet. Work finished, Czech Gypsies, sick and caregivers, sang beautiful and proud Czech songs. They had an innate sense of harmony. As soon as they heard a melody, they harmonized it without any hesitation. Once, I was walking quietly and alone along the central alley of the block. Suddenly, I hear a woman’s song in two voices (soprano and alto). I approach and listen. They stop. They were Czech women. I ask them kindly to continue. It was a Gypsy song: “Odoï télé, balval pour del – Mro pirano, ouj ma moikel“, etc. Melancholic prisoner’s complaint, full of charm. And what timbres! They sang it to me several times since, and I learned it; and the Czech songs that the women sang while going to delousing or coming back from it: “Koliné, Koliné, prénkné stoich Wrowiné“.

Often, the blocks were quiet. No trace of SS, not a single deported tyrant. Then, we would go visit our friends. In the German blocks, our friends sang us their favorite song: “Faria“. They had a warm, moving, unforgettable timbre. Perhaps recordings of “Faria” or “Odoï télé” exist. For non-Gypsy detainees…

…the defeat of Germany was inevitable, but morale was directly influenced by the variations undergone by the convoys. Sometimes days and weeks passed without new convoys being seen arriving. Then, euphoria won the camp and the doctors believed in the utility of their work. One day, shirts were distributed to the sick; good sign. In a general way, the Gypsy nurses were quite well dressed. One of the most important clothing items for them was the shawl. They all had beautiful shawls that served as headscarves. We all know the instinctive gesture that feminine modesty, surprised by an indiscreet gaze, prompts. All works of art representing female nudity show the gesture, accomplished or unaccomplished, seeking to protect the two most vulnerable modesty centers from the gaze: one hand moves towards the throat and the other towards the Mount of Venus and the underlying depression. Gypsy women, surprised in their nudity, held—in their charming confusion—both hands to their head to hide… the absence of hair. Then, recovered from their surprise, they held one hand down and hid what they could… with one hand. On the other hand, they used the shawl with admirable art. They made a draped hairstyle out of it so as to let two rectangles fall onto each shoulder, framing the head and lending their head the grace of Egyptian princesses painted on the walls of tombs or the lids of certain sarcophagi. They did not know it, but to us their posture and their joy were radiant; weak compensation for the profanation of their hair.

In this small universe that was the Gypsy camp, the life of the races became more and more intimate. The SS exercised no violence and also underwent the charm of the female presence and the presence of children. Blows and insults only came from a few tyrannical Polish and German deportees. The latter made it a point of honor not to lose the habit. Friendships were formed and many Gypsy women had connections with deportees from other camps and even with SS. The notion of “Rassenschande” (racial pollution) was nothing more than a facade for many SS.

THE Gypsy camp (Auschwitz II, section E) was an enclave in the whole constituted by the Birkenau work-extermination camp. The Gypsies living in this enclave felt protected by an immunity preserving them from direct death (gas, intracardiac injection, bullet, hanging). They enjoyed, in a way, a tacit situation.

What was the horizon of this small world? To the east, a landscape of SS guard barracks and electrified barbed wire; to the west, the railway line where transports descended, and, beyond, the women’s camp; far away, towards the south, the chain of the Tatra Mountains stood out, whose color and precision varied with the season and atmospheric conditions, but which constantly attracted eyes and thoughts. It was asserted, and it was probably true, that the mountains sheltered partisans, and we hoped that one day they would come help us break the chains of this unprecedented slavery in history and join the maquis.

To the north, the Gypsy camp had as its immediate neighbor the general hospital of Birkenau, beyond which the horizon was closed by the crematoria. One saw from near the convoys, the Sonderkommando bustling in front of the crematoria, the flames from the chimneys, and we received the characteristic odors, smoke, and soot.

What could the thoughts of these beings endowed with sensitivity and reflection be then? Can the feeling of security resist for long such sights? But hope always fights, even against the evidence: life continued. In the intervals of calm and euphoria, small orchestras gathered and valses, marches, pieces of operetta resounded a little everywhere. One saw the flock of children run like a whirlwind in the main alley of the camp.

• — Where are you running like that, children?

• — They are going to play “The Blue Danube”….

  Another group of children called out from afar:

• — Come! They are going to play “La Paloma”.

Often, SS stopped undecided before choosing. They stood in the second row, behind the children, and listened.

The proximity of extermination sites did not prevent the blossoming of deep feelings. We know the habit of certain lovers to engrave a heart into the bark of a tree in which they write two first names. We often saw in the Gypsy camp hearts where names… numbers were written, or a male first name and a number preceded by a Z (Gypsy). For example: “Zbygniew” and “Z 5248” (at the washroom).

I noted and verified from the beginning until the end of the existence of the camp that Czech and Slovak Gypsy women were of exemplary fidelity. The attraction of food and clothing advantages rarely was decisive for them in the acceptance of a situation of concubine or wife in the Gypsy manner. German Gypsies, on the other hand, let themselves be more easily dazzled by prospects of food and clothing well-being.

THE DEPORTATION OF GYPSIES

Rare are the documents that bear witness to the conditions of internment of Gypsies during the Nazi occupation. These almost unbearable images were taken by a German soldier at Tiraspol (Romania) during the winter of 1943-44.

The Romani Camp of Auschwitz: 20,302 Dead

In 1965, the Polish medical journal Przegląd Lekarski published an important study by surviving doctors of the Romani camp, which ceased to exist on August 1, 1944, when the internees who had survived the appalling conditions of the camp perished in the gas chambers.

The Polish doctors were able to establish, in conclusion, the tragic toll of this extermination. We reproduce it below.

NUMBER OF ROMANI INTERNED AT AUSCHWITZ:

• From February 1943 to August 1944, brought to the Romani camp and registered: 10,899 men and 10,097 women: 20,996 people

• Also brought by transport, without being registered: 1,700 people

  Total interned at the camp: 22,696 Romani

NUMBER OF ROMANI TAKEN TO OTHER CAMPS:

• November 9, 1943: approx. 300 people

• April 15, 1944: 1,357 people

• May 24, 1944: 226 people

• Beginning of June 1944: 2,300 people

  In total, sent to other camps: 4,183 Romani

However, the Romani unfit for work—elderly, sick, and children—were brought back to the main camp and taken to the gas chamber.

Perished in this manner:

• From the transports of April and May 1944: 1,400 people

• From the transport of early June 1944: 400 people

  Total: 1,800 Romani

If we deduct this figure from the 4,183 Romani sent to other camps, there remain 2,383 Romani effectively transferred. Added to this are 11 women who were released after sterilization. Therefore, after the liquidation of the camp, 2,394 Romani remained alive, representing 10.4% of the total interned.

NUMBER OF ROMANI WHO PERISHED IN THE GAS CHAMBERS:

• May 23, 1943: 1,035 people

• Late June 1943: 1,700 people

• At the end of autumn 1943: 68 people

• In June–July 1944 (those sent back from transport): 1,800 people

• August 1, 1944: 3,300 people

  In total, gassed: 7,903 Romani

Therefore, more than 12,000 Romani died in the camp from exhaustion and disease. Adding those who were gassed, we arrive at the figure of 20,302 Romani who perished at the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp.

Furthermore, in the eyes of the German Romani, the SS were soldiers, and these soldiers were familiar to them from free life (“outside,” as they used to say in the camp to designate freedom). These soldiers were at the camp simply because they were assigned there. In the minds of the German Romani, who had no political understanding, the SS was not even an enemy. In July 1943, I had among my patients a young man suffering from epidemic typhus, both legs amputated following accidental injuries. This sick man, a Tyrolean Romani, was often visited by an Austrian SS man—a magnificent fellow, his childhood friend. Each time, he would tell me: “Take good care of him, you’ll get cigarettes.” He offered me two cigarettes every time.

A mother’s insight quickly notices when her daughter is liked. Such was the case with Lisa’s mother. Lisa was 17 or 18 years old and was in the hospital at the same time as her mother. They both had epidemic typhus and superinfected scabies. Lisa was blonde and had sculptural features. Despite her cropped hair, her thinness, and her scabies, no one could look at her without admiring her. Her mother immediately noticed that people were looking at her with admiration. She called me to her bedside and said to me: “You know, Lisa isn’t really Romani; she’s only a minus” (meaning that Hitler’s anthropologists had failed to determine with precision the amount of Romani blood running in her veins). I replied to her that Lisa’s beauty and grace, despite her Romani blood—and even if she had more of it—far surpassed the beauty of many German Aryan women.

What can I say? Edema and deficiency enteritis soon appeared, and the block leader had her transferred to the diarrhea block, where I went to see her every day. She passed away with a hopeful smile and in the joy that she was still considered beautiful “nevertheless.” In death, she was as beautiful as Denise, the French Romani who was to die of tuberculosis in August or September of the same year.

In free life, death only prevails after a hard struggle, after the complete exhaustion of the organism, upon a depleted body that is no more than the shadow of a vanquished being. In the camp, however, where doctors are virtually powerless, the body does not exhaust itself fighting, and a more brutal death does not alter beauty. Hence the beauty in death of the young Romani girls and women who died at Auschwitz.

One day, comrades from neighboring blocks called us to show us some quite exceptional specimens: cases of heterochromia. An entire family (their name was Mechau) of seven or eight people—brothers, sisters, cousins, and an uncle—each possessing one black eye and one light blue eye. From time to time, one encounters odd-colored eyes, but exceptionally so different. These Romani, tall, vigorous, and apparently healthy, were distributed among the infirmary blocks. Why in the hospital and not in the living blocks?

tion? They are not sick. It is for “observation” (Zur Beobachtung). I receive two members of this family in our block. The next day, we receive the visit of Doctor Mengele — with the usual ceremony —. I have known Mengele long enough for my “Achtung” to lack rigidity completely. On this subject, I remember that a Lagerarzt (Klein? Lukas?) made us understand that he did not want any “Achtung“. So Mengele calls me:

• — Have you seen the Mechau family, heterochromia?

• — Yes, Sir Lagerarzt.

  Then, he says to me confidentially this:

• — Well, when the time comes (Wenn es soweit ist), you understand? You will carefully remove the eyes, you will put them in the containers that will be prepared for you and we will send them to Berlin for the examination of the iris pigments. You understand? Question of genetics, dominant recessive heredity, etc. Very interesting!

Mengele spoke to me with such simplicity, with such tranquility that, despite everything I had already seen, despite everything I knew, I was horrified. And I was horrified, not by the fact, but by Mengele’s confident tranquility. How, these beautiful young men, these beautiful young girls, neither gas chamber, nor intracardiac injection, but expected and watched-for death, thus calculated and planned. Doctor Mengele knew that this had to happen. All the SS doctors knew the evolution of the moral and physical state of the Gypsies. Only, Mengele confessed it.

And Mengele was not mistaken. Scabies comes, lesions become infected, undernourishment and avitaminosis contribute their part, tuberculosis sets in and evolves and, within two or three months of “observation” at the hospital, “es ist schon soweit” (the time has arrived, it’s finished). The word “death” is not pronounced; it would be too cruel; but “es ist soweit” offends no one. One after another, someone comes to bring me a number and a bottle with preservation fluid… and I remove the eyes. The autopsy shows most of the time: tuberculosis. And thus weeks pass; no one speaks of the Mechau family anymore.

FORGIVE, YES – FORGET, NEVER

In entrusting us with the notes that, the hour of retirement having come, he started to write about his dramatic experience as a deportee, Dr Vexler wanted, he told us, “to pull from oblivion the tragedy of the Gypsies” of whom he was the companion in misery and of whom he remained the friend.

It is in the same spirit and with the same will that we will return, in a future issue, to the history of the Gypsy camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau, so unrecognized that no monument commemorates it. But it has left in the Gypsy people indelible traces that condition, still today, part of their behavior. On this count as well, we must keep it in memory.

Dr. Iancou Vexler, the REAL eyeball plucker of the Mechau family of gypsies which displayed remarkable heterochromia eyes, one brown, one blue colored eye. All described as succumbing to disease, mainly tuberculosis, while segregated in the hospital. And specifically Vexler states NOT heart stabbing with chloroform as perjurer Nyiszli claimed in TWO wildly different conflicting and vindictive  FABRICATED FANTASY versions meant to lynch Mengele.

This testimony from the REAL heterochromia eyeball plucker, Dr. Jancou Vexler assigned to the gypsy camp under Dr. Josef Mengele COMPLETELY AND TOTALLY demolishes the outrageous fabricated lies and perjury of the bastard who kicked off the Mengele-as-Frankenstein scam Miklos Nyiszli, who also claimed to remove heterochromia eyes – of non-existent heterochromia gypsy twins he told two wildly different, both never happened, impossible lies about Mengele stabbing 4 pairs of gypsy twin hearts in one night, 3 pair – absolutely never existed twins with heterochromia.

This is a beautiful, honest and moving testimony from Dr. Vexler, in direct opposition to the all too common Wieselian / Zisblattian memoir frauds all academia cites as “the real eyewitness account.”

Mengele is completely exonerated of stabbing any member of the Mechau family of heterochromia displaying gypsies. Vexler describes their wasting deaths of tuberculosis within the hospital ward. NO HEART STABBING OF ANY HETEROCHROMIA GYPSIES BY THE FRAMED Dr. Josef MENGELE ! According to an all too  rare honest Jew.

Unfortunately the Holocaust industrial complex has suppressed  Vexler’s testimony until now, which completely contradicts the fabrications of Nyiszli, and collapses the Mengele as Frankenstein scam of the Jewish cult. Vexler chose humanity over furthering his ethnic cult’s perceived interests via perjury and depraved lies to frame his captors as Nyiszli succeeded in doing  – until now.

The Mechau family of unique gypsies had some members displaying heterochromia, one brown eye and one albino-like blue eye. Their hereditary genetic condition was unidentified at the time, but is likely Waardenburg Syndrome type 2, named after a Dutch guy who “discovered” it years after Mengele and Magnussen’s pioneering work analyzing this unique family of gypsies.

Baldwin Mechau, a deaf-mute, a symptom of some types of as-yet unnamed Waardenburg syndrome hereditary geneticist Dr. Josef Mengele was close to getting credit for discovering and named after himself!!

There are tears in my eyes as just when I think I can’t find anything more devastating to the Miklos Nyiszli fraud perjury, here it is.

And it comes in the form of beautiful poetry that beautifully describes the humanity of Auschwitz. There were some “GOOD” SS there, as a matter of fact there is no actual cruelty portrayed by SS guards whatsoever. Other than following the orders from above that confined the prisoners to a slow death from disease and malnutrition. And Vexler’s belief in gassings, described somewhat from a distance – I mean compared to HOAXER AND FRAUD MIKLOS NYISZLI who claimed to have worked inside the gas chambers and floated all around, miraculously seeing the most important sites to frame his captors.

The only questionable thing I have ever found said by Vexler is that he saw samples of eyes in Mengele’s office. What he describes is clearly an anthropologic chart made of glass eyes. I would say this must be a result of improper translation, he should have known it was an anthropologic survey chart and not real eyes pinned to the walls like butterflies like some 5 year old dumbass repeated including at the Mengele witch trial / show trial / Mock trial in Jerusalem in 1985.

1. In a sworn affidavit he claims he helped patients undress before Mengele stabbed their hearts with chloroform.
2. In his book to cover his ass from accidently partially implicating himself in murders HE INTIRELY INVENTED, he came up with another story, where he deduced the evil Mengele heart stabbed (non-existent) heterochromia twins by examining 4 sets of twins brought to him one night. He found – which almost certainly would have been imperceptible – tiny pinpricks that proved the heart was stabbed and injected with chloroform. He sniffed it and yup smelled like chloroform to him. And he claims when he tipped the hearts, the blood didn’t drain out because of massive clots instantly formed by chloroform- DESPITE CHLOROFORM NOT HAVING THIS CAPABILITY OR ACTING LIKE THIS WHATSOEVER! You know, that thing in movies or trashy tv shows they pour on a rag that dissipates into gas right quick?
