Overview & Purpose : This Exhibit compiles authentic published press accounts, verified survivor testimonies, chronological records, and physical evidence establishing that Defendant Susan Vigorito (a/k/a Sora Vigorito, Suzanna Seiler) was publicly exposed as a fabricated commercial testimonial promoter for Chabad by genuine survivors of Auschwitz and Dr. Josef Mengele’s anthropologic twin research. This evidence demonstrates that Susan Vigorito was never interred in Auschwitz; that her true birth almost certainly aligns with 1944, 1945, or 1946 (consistent with 1963 New York high school senior graduation records) rather than her stated alternating 1941 or 1942 dates of birth; and that Susan Vigorito acquired a fabricated black tattoo sequence (ZW792, with witnesses also describing an anomalous Star of David) on her forearm in the mid-to-late 1980s, contrasting sharply with authentic Auschwitz tattoos which display faded blue ink.

The claims by Sora Vigorito to be a survivor of the infamous “Mengele twin” experiments at Auschwitz have been denounced as fraudulent by Irene Hizme and Rene Slotkin, who themselves were victims of the cruel experiments on twins performed at Auschwitz by Dr. Joseph Mengele. Vigorito denies their claims and insists that she is indeed a surviving Mengele twin.
Vigorito, 55, claims to be a little girl shown at the age of 5 when the Soviet Red Army liberated Auschwitz from the retreating Nazis in 1945. In an often-seen newsreel, the little girl, among other Mengele twins, is shown pulling up her shirt sleeve to expose her concentration camp number. Vigorito was recently in St. Louis as the guest speaker at the local Chabad organization’s Woman of Valor Brunch which honored community leader Berenice Lyons. She also spoke recently at a Chabad event in New York City, where she was confronted by other Auschwitz survivors who denied her claim to have been a Mengele twin along with her late identical twin sister Channah.
At the time the local N’shei Chabad brunch was being publicized, the St. Louis Jewish Light received undocumented reports casting doubt on the authenticity of Vigorito’s claims. Since that time, the dispute has entered the public domain and her accusers have spoken on the record to the Cleveland Jewish News and the St. Louis Jewish Light.
An organization called CANDLES, which stands for Children of Auschwitz Nazi Deadly Lab Experiment Survivors, issued a statement attributed to Mengele twin Irene Hizme, which stated, “Susan (Sora) Vigorito claims to be a Mengele twin survivor. She is a fraud.” Susan was removed from the organization CANDLES in 1989. Some of its proofs are:
- In 1985, survivors saw no number on her arm. By 1989, she had a number on her left forearm;
- Auschwitz tattoos are blue; Susan’s is black. The clarity of her number bespeaks its newness. Authentic numerals are faded with the age of 50 years;
- Susan’s number, ZW792A is not a valid Auschwitz number, according to the woman in charge of the numbering system in Auschwitz for three years, who is today an expert consultant to the Washington Holocaust Museum;
- The child in the Russian liberation film Susan claims to be has a different number, A1149;
- Mengele twins recognize their own stories purloined into Susan’s account of her purported experiences, and none of surviving Mengele twin remembers Susan or any female twins of the very young age she was at Auschwitz. None of Mengele’s documents lists her.
Hizme and her fraternal twin brother Rene Slotkin say that Vigorito “has brought untold anguish to surviving Mengele twins, using their memories to earn big dollars. This is an affront to all who were martyred”.
In St. Louis, Rabbi Yosef Landa, director of Chabad House here, said he checked with his colleagues prior to Vigorito’s appearance at a Woman of Valor brunch and had spoken to her directly. “Any concerns or doubts that I had were entertained [sic] allayed. I believe that she is telling the truth”.
An article titled “Unfortunate controversy over Mengele twin” by Cynthia Dettellbach in the Cleveland Jewish News quotes Vigorito as saying that Hizme and Slotkin are “jealous of her because she is the better speaker, and, hence, more popular on the lecture circuit. Also, she is younger than other surviving twins, and thus likely to be around longest to tell her story. Irene Hizme calls Vigorito’s story, which says ‘purloined parts’ from other twins’ stories, ‘chulul Hashem,’ a desecration of God’s name”.
The point of this column is not to judge who is or is not telling the truth in the unhappy Vigorito case. Supposedly, a bet din (rabbinic court) will decide in the near future. The point is that Holocaust revisionism can conceivably come from both sides of the aisle: from Jew-haters who wish to deny the Holocaust ever happened; to the much rarer instance where people who did not suffer the ravages of the Holocaust claim they did.
If anyone on either side is not telling the truth about the Holocaust, and that untruth can be proved beyond a reasonable doubt, it is the responsibility of the Jewish press to point it out. Otherwise, not only is our credibility as journalists placed in jeopardy, so is the validity of all other Holocaust testimony. And the latter, tragically, would provide Hitler with still another posthumous victory.
“We must discredit those who would whitewash the (devilish) details of the Holocaust into bland, meaningless generalities,” I wrote in reviewing a recent Newsweek magazine cover story on the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.
Likewise, we must be vigilant against those who, for whatever reason, would fabricate devilish details that, for them at least, didn’t happen. Only in that way can we keep the terrible truths of the Holocaust intact and instructive for the generations to come.

A woman who says she survived medical experiments on twins in Auschwitz has been openly challenged as a fraud by members of a survivors’ organization in New York.
Sora Vigorito of Cleveland, who spoke at a fund-raising event for Chabad of the West Side, ended up face to face Monday night with angry members of CANDLES, a group of survivors of Nazi medical experiments.
All parties ultimately agreed to bring the case to a Jewish court of law, or bet din, but not before an evening of bitter emotions flowed in front of some 100 guests in a private apartment in Manhattan.
“She is making money on our tragedy!” said survivor Eva Kor of Indiana, president and founder of CANDLES, after challenging Vigorito’s story. “It is being trashed on the floor by people like Susan Vigorito.” Vigorito, who says she was 2½ years old when she was brought to Auschwitz, changed her name to Sora when she became observant.
“I am not on trial here,” said Vigorito, who read a statement in answer to the accusations. “I will go to a bet din, but not to defend who I am. Before a bet din I will stand as innocent. It is the burden of the accusers to prove”.
Actual cases of fraud are exceedingly rare, say historians and psychologists who work with Holocaust survivors.
Joanne Rudof, an archivist at Yale University’s Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimony, said historians check facts carefully when interviewing survivors and witnesses—”not because we are afraid about Holocaust deniers but because it’s good history”.
Out of some 3,200 cases, Rudof recalled two problems: One was an American who claimed to have liberated Auschwitz, when in fact “no Americans liberated Auschwitz. It was liberated by the Soviet army.” In the second case, a man said he had escaped Germany during the Nazi years but the story “didn’t hang together,” in part because his German passport was not marked with a J (for Jew).
Adults who create a false Holocaust survivor identity “are very rare and it reflects some psychopathology,” said psychologist Yehuda Nir, author of “The Lost Childhood,” an account of his own survival as a hidden child in Poland.
“It’s a very rare occurrence,” said William Shulman, director of the Holocaust Resource Center and Archives at Queensborough Community College in Bayside, who said he reviewed one person from his speakers’ list because of doubts about his story. Mark Weitzman of the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s New York office declined to use this speaker as a person as a speaker.
“There is a lot of jealousy among survivors,” Weitzman added. “I hear complaints and comments about every single one of my speakers: This one gets too much limelight, this one gets too much money.”
But, he added, “99.9 percent of the people are exactly who they claim to be.”
Questions arose about Sora Vigorito in 1989 when members of CANDLES – Children of Auschwitz Nazi Deadly Lab Experiments Survivors – met her for the second time and saw a number tattooed on her arm where they previously had seen nothing. Virtually all Auschwitz prisoners were tattooed.
Irene Hizme, who survived Auschwitz with her twin brother, Rene Slotkin, first met Vigorito at the 1985 survivors’ reunion in Philadelphia. “She was wearing short sleeves. … I was looking at her arm and I saw no number. She said, ‘Oh, my father had it removed after the war.'”
“But in 1989 I saw her again when we were appearing on the ‘Geraldo’ show about the search for [Dr. Josef] Mengele and Auschwitz twins… I looked at her forearm and glaringly there was this black, new number – a very unusual number with a Jewish star and ZW792A.”
When asked about it, Vigorito said, according to Hizme, “I’ve always had it.” From that moment, Hizme said, “I, my brother and Eva Kor felt there was something not right there.”.
Vigorito maintains that she had lied originally out of deep shame about the number, which she says was covered by makeup. She says similar numbers have been described by Holocaust historians. Today, she is observant and wears sleeves that cover her arms.
But CANDLES investigations into Auschwitz and Yad Vashem archives convinced members that Vigorito had invented her past. They removed Vigorito as a member in 1989. Vigorito threatened to sue but decided against it so as not to attract Holocaust deniers, says Miriam Mendelson, her friend and spiritual adviser in Cleveland.
Mendelson, whose husband, Rabbi Mordechai Mendelson, is head of Chabad of Cleveland Heights, told The Jewish Week Vigorito confided her past – and the accusations against her – several years ago.
“I have been friends with her since she came to Cleveland – close friends,” added Mendelson. “I’m with her quite a lot, and if she is a fraud then I am Elvis Presley.”.
Mendelson said Vigorito began speaking about her survival and return to Orthodox Judaism at Chabad and-fund raising events sometime in 1989. On the weekend before her recent appearance in New York, she had invited Vigorito on Chabad in Buffalo and in Cincinnati, according to Rabbi Shlomo Kugel of Chabad of the West Side.
Not until this visit to New York City has Vigorito been publicly confronted, and then only after behind-the-scenes efforts failed, said Rabbi Kugel, who had invited Vigorito on the recommendation of a Chabad friend in San Antonio, Texas.
“He told me he had just had her there,” Rabbi Kugel told The Jewish Week. “I figured we’d go for it. I had no clue of any problems whatsoever.”.
The problems practically smacked him in the face days after he mailed 5,000 flyers advertising Vigorito’s appearance. Some flyers came to the homes of local CANDLES members. Almost immediately, leaflets condemning the event appeared in Orthodox synagogues on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. The Slotkins called Rabbi Kugel and his wife, Rivky, and pressed them to cancel.
When Rabbi Kugel called Vigorito to ask about the accusations, “she got very upset and said, ‘Oh, they’re are [sic] hate against me.'”.
Feeling he could not judge in this case, Rabbi Kugel consulted Rabbi Zelig Sharfstein of Lubavitch of Cincinnati, who advised him not to cancel the event lest he be guilty of ruining a good name. He suggested inviting the accusers and giving Vigorito a chance to respond. Afterward, the case should be settled in a bet din, he recommended.
Vigorito agreed to the format.
Monday night, in the hosts’ living room, Rabbi Kugel distributed a letter explaining the controversy. By the time Vigorito entered the room, it was buzzing.
For nearly an hour the spoke of torture, loss, survival, recovery and finally of her return to Orthodox Judaism. She described scenes and sounds of death with clarity but little emotion, later explaining that she suffers from post-traumatic stress syndrome.
Afterward, Rabbi Kugel made sure that both survivors and others in the audience could ask questions.
“I was mocked about my tattoo,” Vigorito said, explaining that she had lied in 1985. “I began to cover it up with cosmetics. I refused to show it by saying my father had removed it.”.
Later, Vigorito withdrew to a back room.
In the living room, Glenn Richter called Vigorito’s presentation “the new face of Holocaust revisionism.” Richter, a former activist for Soviet Jewry, had videotaped and recorded the event. “As [survivor] Rene Slotkin said, ‘If she was so young, then when we are no longer around she will remain as the sole surviving Mengele twin.’ History has become the last person recorded it.”.
Before leaving, Eva Kor promised to go to the bet din when a meeting is arranged. On Tuesday, Rabbi Kugel told The Jewish Week plans are under way.
“If someone thinks I am [not a survivor] they should tell me who I am, because I don’t know who I am,” Vigorito told The Jewish Week in a back room of the apartment, adding that she only wants to “talk about my rebbe,” the late Lubavitcher Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson, whom Vigorito says she met during her turn to Orthodoxy.
“I don’t do this for money, so give me a reason why I do this.”.
But the next morning, Rabbi Kugel told The Jewish Week Vigorito had just “asked me to write the check to tzedaka (charity).” He said she was supposed to pay her $465 “beyond the cost of bringing her here.”.
“I didn’t have any problem with that at all,” he said. “People deserve to be paid.”.

Unfortunate controversy over Mengele twin

For the last few weeks I’ve been wrestling with a story that first broke in the New York Jewish Week; it involves Cleveland resident Susan (formerly Susan) Vigorito. Depending on whom you believe, Vigorito really is or falsely claims to be a celebrated Mengele twin.
I first met Susan Vigorito in the mid-1980s when I interviewed her about her Holocaust experiences. (She became observant a few years later, changing her name to Sora.) Vigorito vividly described to me her first hours at Auschwitz as she and her sister, then 2-1/2, hid under their grandmother’s long skirt until her sister fell, somehow yelled “twins,” and the two were spirited off to Dr. Mengele’s infamous laboratory.
In the harrowing months that followed, Susan and her twin were confined to a cage and subject to all manner of terrible experiments which her sister didn’t survive. In the famous picture taken on the day Russian soldiers liberated Auschwitz, Vigorito said she was the solemn-faced little girl in a babushka extending her tattooed arm for all to see.
In 1985, Vigorito went to a Holocaust gathering in Philadelphia where, upon relating her story, she was asked to join CANDLES, a group of survivors of Nazi medical experiments. In 1989, as part of the CANDLES group, she returned to Auschwitz with one of her daughters, an experience she wrote about for the CJN.
Also in 1989, CANDLES founder and president Eva Kor, together with Mengele twins Irene Hizme and Rene Slotkin (they are fraternal twins), began to seriously doubt Vigorito’s authenticity.
The claims and counterclaims were renewed again recently as Vigorito began to speak publicly, and for pay, about her experiences. Some of the issues under dispute are:
- That Vigorito didn’t have a number tattooed on her arm in 1985 when CANDLES members first met her, but sported a freshly minted black tattoo in 1989 on the day she and other Mengele twins appeared on the “Geraldo” show. Vigorito says she always had a tattoo but it hid with make-up, and that her numbers are blue, like those of other survivors.
- That Vigorito’s numbers, ZW792A plus a Jewish star, is like no other number given to a twin or to anyone else at Auschwitz. All false accusations, says Vigorito, who cites two books, one published and one not, indicating that numbers and symbols like hers were used.
- That there is meticulous German documentation for every Mengele twin, except for Vigorito, available for the asking at Yad Vashem. Vigorito maintains that, like her, 90% of all survivors don’t have documentation proving their incarceration in the camps.
Vigorito’s daughter Melissa, a student at Kent State University, believes her mother is who she says she is; further, she told me, she never remembers her mother without a number on her arm. Vigorito is also defended by Miriam Mendelson, the wife of local Chabad Rabbi Mordechai Mendelson. As a fundraiser for Chabad, Vigorito speaks all over the country, recounting her Auschwitz experience as the prelude to her adult return to Orthodox Judaism.
Vigorito claims that Eva Kor, backed up by her friends Irene Hizme and Rene Slotkin, is jealous of her because she is the better speaker, and, hence, more popular on the lecture circuit. Also, she is younger than other surviving twins, and thus likely to be around longer to tell her story. Irene Hizme calls Vigorito’s story, which says “purloined parts” from other twins’ stories, “chulul Hashem,” a desecration of God’s name.
The point of this column is not to judge who is or is not telling the truth in the unhappy Vigorito case. Supposedly, a bet din (rabbinic court) will decide in the near future.
The point is that Holocaust revisionism can conceivably come from both sides of the aisle: from Jew-haters who wish to deny the Holocaust ever happened; to the much rarer instance where people who did not suffer the ravages of the Holocaust claim they did.
If anyone on either side is not telling the truth about the Holocaust, and that untruth can be proved beyond a reasonable doubt, it is the responsibility of the Jewish press to point it out. Otherwise, not only is our credibility as journalists placed in jeopardy, so is the validity of all other Holocaust testimony. And the latter, tragically, would provide Hitler with still another posthumous victory.
“We must discredit those who would whitewash the (devilish) details of the Holocaust into bland, meaningless generalities,” I wrote in reviewing a recent Newsweek magazine cover story on the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.
Likewise, we must be vigilant against those who, for whatever reason, would fabricate devilish details that, for them at least, didn’t happen. Only in that way can we keep the terrible truths of the Holocaust intact and instructive for the generations to come.
